What this trial studies

The EXCEL registry aims to create a comprehensive, bi-national database of patients requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) due to acute cardiac or respiratory failure. This observational study will collect detailed information on patient selection, complications, costs, and patient-reported outcomes to improve ECMO practices. By utilizing the Theoretical Domains Framework, the registry seeks to identify gaps in evidence and explore barriers to implementing best practices in ECMO care. The ultimate goal is to enhance long-term outcomes for critically ill patients in intensive care units.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this registry are adults admitted to hospitals in Australia and New Zealand who require ECMO.

Not a fit: Patients who do not require ECMO or are not admitted to participating hospitals may not benefit from this registry.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this registry could lead to improved patient outcomes and optimized ECMO practices in critical care settings.

How similar studies have performed: Other similar registries have shown success in improving clinical practices and patient outcomes, indicating that this approach is promising.
