What this trial studies

This observational study aims to investigate how lung mechanics are affected during the early phase of mechanical ventilation in patients with respiratory distress. It utilizes a non-invasive PEEP-step method to assess the elastic properties of the lungs, allowing for improved monitoring and individualized ventilator care. The study will collect data from both healthy lungs and those with acute lung failure, focusing on the first hours of ventilator treatment. This approach seeks to enhance the understanding of lung mechanics and potentially reduce ventilator-induced lung injury.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults over 18 years old who are undergoing planned or acute ventilator treatment in an intensive care unit or operating room.

Not a fit: Patients under 18 years old or those with severe respiratory or cardiac conditions may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to better monitoring and management of ventilator therapy, reducing the risk of lung injury and improving patient outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: While there is limited data on lung mechanics during the initial hours of ventilation, the non-invasive PEEP-step method represents a novel approach that has not been extensively tested in this context.
