What this trial studies

This study tests a novel implementation program aimed at increasing access to tobacco control services for rural adults who smoke but are not yet ready to quit. It employs a hybrid approach that combines implementation and effectiveness outcomes, utilizing community paramedicine and mobile health technology. The trial will compare a standard implementation program with an enhanced version that includes an EMS Champion program, focusing on counties with high smoking rates in rural areas. Participants will receive support through a mobile health-assisted brief abstinence experience alongside nicotine replacement therapy.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 and older who are current smokers, not yet ready to quit, and can engage with mobile health technology.

Not a fit: Patients who are actively quitting smoking or preparing to quit within the next 30 days will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly improve smoking cessation rates among rural populations who currently lack access to effective support.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success with similar community-based approaches to smoking cessation, but this specific implementation strategy is novel.
