What this trial studies

Active career California firefighters are randomly assigned to watch one of five short (about 5-minute) documentary-style videos after completing a pre-intervention survey. Participants then complete a post-intervention survey to measure changes in perceived susceptibility to cancer, perceived barriers to risk-reduction practices, self-efficacy, and perceived benefits. The primary outcomes are immediate changes in those beliefs and self-reported intentions to adopt preventive behaviors. The intervention is delivered by the University of California, Davis at UC Davis Health in Sacramento.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are current active career firefighters based in California.

Not a fit: Volunteer, retired, or non-California firefighters and those already consistently using cancer-prevention practices are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, these videos could increase firefighters' adoption of protective practices and potentially reduce long-term cancer risk and mortality.

How similar studies have performed: Educational video interventions have yielded modest improvements in health beliefs and safety behaviors in other occupational settings, but using this approach specifically for firefighters' cancer prevention is relatively novel.
