Understanding chronic kidney disease in Sub-Saharan Africa
Prevalence, Incidence and Risk Signature of Chronic Kidney Disease in a Primary Care Setting in Semirural Sub-Saharan Africa
This study is trying to understand how common chronic kidney disease is in Sub-Saharan Africa and what factors might be causing it by looking at the health and lifestyle of adults in the Bagamoyo district.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to assess the prevalence, incidence, and risk factors associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Sub-Saharan Africa. It will systematically enroll adult patients from the Bagamoyo district hospital and associated dispensaries, collecting comprehensive clinical, biological, lifestyle, and socioeconomic data. Participants will undergo three visits over a year to gather detailed medical histories and assess various risk factors, including cardiovascular diseases and lifestyle choices. The study seeks to fill gaps in existing data regarding CKD in this region, particularly focusing on the interactions between risk factors and kidney health over time.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 and older of African descent, living in the Bagamoyo district area, who are attending outpatient clinics.
Not a fit: Patients under 18 years of age, those not of African descent, or those unwilling to return for follow-up visits may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved understanding and management of chronic kidney disease in Sub-Saharan Africa, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: While there is limited data on CKD in Sub-Saharan Africa, similar studies in other regions have shown success in identifying risk factors and improving patient care, making this approach promising yet somewhat novel.
