What this trial studies

This observational study aims to estimate the prevalence of both symptomatic and asymptomatic valvular heart disease in individuals aged 65 and older in Italy. Approximately 2000 participants will be randomly selected from the general population and will undergo physical examinations, electrocardiography, and echocardiographic assessments by local cardiologists. Data on demographic variables, cardiovascular risk factors, clinical history, and physical findings will be collected to characterize the population better. The study will follow a pre-defined protocol for echocardiography to ensure consistency in data collection.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 65 years and older with no prior history of valvular heart disease.

Not a fit: Patients younger than 65 years or those with acute diseases or recent hospitalizations may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide valuable insights into the prevalence of valvular heart disease in older adults, potentially leading to improved screening and management strategies.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have successfully estimated the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in similar populations, indicating that this approach is well-established.
