What this trial studies

This observational project enrolls adults who complete an online periodontal questionnaire about symptoms, dental history, and oral hygiene. Each participant then receives a standardized clinical periodontal examination during the same visit that is used as the reference standard and categorized as low, medium, or high risk. Questionnaire-based risk labels will be compared with the clinical findings to measure accuracy and agreement. The labeled data will also be used to inform semi-supervised machine-learning models to improve the self-assessment tool.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18 or older who have natural teeth, can complete the online questionnaire independently, and can attend the Abha site for a same-visit clinical periodontal exam are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: People without natural teeth, those currently receiving periodontal therapy or who recently took systemic antibiotics, individuals unable to complete the questionnaire or attend the clinical exam, and those unwilling to tolerate the exam are unlikely to benefit.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the tool could help people recognize gum disease risk earlier and prompt timely dental care to prevent progression and tooth loss.

How similar studies have performed: Prior questionnaire-based self-assessments for periodontal disease have shown mixed accuracy, while applying semi-supervised machine learning to this task is relatively novel.
