Examining Salivary Cytokine Levels in Different Periodontal Conditions
Evaluation of Salivary Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor, Macrophage Inflammatory Protein and Interleukin-1β Levels in Individuals With Different Periodontal Conditions
This study is trying to see if the levels of certain proteins in saliva can help us understand the differences in gum health between people with healthy gums, gingivitis, and periodontitis.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to assess the levels of specific cytokines, including GM-CSF, MIP-1α, and IL-1β, in the saliva of individuals with varying periodontal conditions: healthy gums, gingivitis, and periodontitis. A total of 60 systemically healthy participants will be recruited, with saliva samples collected and analyzed using enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) to determine the inflammatory biomarkers present. The study seeks to understand the relationship between these cytokines and the pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory periodontal diseases.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are systemically healthy individuals with at least twenty permanent teeth, who are non-smokers and have not received periodontal treatment in the last six months.
Not a fit: Patients with systemic diseases, those on regular medications, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and smokers may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance the understanding of periodontal disease mechanisms and lead to improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for patients.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific cytokine analysis in saliva for periodontal conditions may be novel, similar studies have shown the importance of cytokines in understanding inflammatory diseases.
