What this trial studies
The program conducts multimodal eye screenings for adults aged 35+ in the Char Fasson sub-district using clinical exams, imaging, and AI-assisted tools to detect cataract, glaucoma, diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration. Screenings are delivered through outreach to island and rural communities leveraging local Cyclone Preparedness Program volunteers and clinic sites, with referrals to a partnering eye hospital for further evaluation and cataract surgery if indicated. The project is run by Data Yakka in collaboration with local health partners and collects screening data to identify previously undiagnosed eye disease. People with a known eye disease diagnosis are excluded so the effort focuses on detecting new, untreated conditions.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults aged 35 years and older who reside in the Char Fasson sub-district and do not already have a diagnosed eye disease.
Not a fit: People with a prior diagnosis of eye disease or those living outside Char Fasson who cannot access local screening or follow-up care may not benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, it could help people get diagnosed earlier and receive cataract surgery or other care, reducing preventable vision loss in the community.
How similar studies have performed: Previous community screening programs and emerging AI-assisted eye screening tools have increased detection and referral for treatable eye conditions, though outcomes vary with local health system capacity.
