Looking at blood markers linked to bone, muscle, and energy metabolism

Retrospective Monocentric Evaluation of Biomarkers Associated With Bone, Muscle and Energy Metabolism

IRCCS San Raffaele · NCT07454252

This project will look at past blood tests from adults to see if specific bone turnover and formation markers relate to muscle function and energy metabolism.

What this trial studies

This is a retrospective, single-center analysis of blood samples collected at IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital between January 1, 2006 and March 31, 2025. The work examines circulating bone formation markers (P1NP, osteocalcin, bone alkaline phosphatase) and resorption markers (CTx-I, NTx-I, DPD) alongside metabolic parameters and available clinical data. Statistical modeling will be used to explore interactions among bone, muscle, and energy metabolism, including possible links mediated by osteocalcin and adipokines. No interventions are performed because the project uses existing laboratory data and records.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged over 18 who had blood sampling performed at the Laboratory Medicine Service of IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital between January 1, 2006 and March 31, 2025 are eligible for inclusion.

Not a fit: People under 18, those without qualifying blood samples at the specified lab and dates, and patients seeking a treatment change are unlikely to receive direct benefit from this retrospective analysis.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the analysis could improve understanding of how bone-derived signals relate to metabolism and help refine biomarker-based monitoring or risk stratification.

How similar studies have performed: Prior research has shown associations between osteocalcin and glucose metabolism and has used bone turnover markers clinically, but integrated statistical modeling of bone–muscle–energy interactions remains relatively exploratory.
