What this trial studies
This observational study investigates the role of specific biomarkers in diagnosing and predicting outcomes for patients with aortic aneurysm (AA) and aortic dissection (AD). It includes a discovery phase with a matched case-control design, where patients with various outcomes are compared to healthy controls. The prognosis aspect focuses on patients with confirmed AA and AD, tracking all-cause mortality and in-hospital mortality through medical records and death certificates. The study aims to enhance understanding of these conditions and improve patient management.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include patients referred for evaluation of aortic dissection or those with suspected aortic aneurysm or dissection.
Not a fit: Patients with conditions unrelated to aortic dissection or those with significant comorbidities like active cancer or severe pulmonary diseases may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved diagnostic and prognostic tools for patients with aortic aneurysm and dissection.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have explored biomarkers in cardiovascular conditions, but this specific approach to aortic aneurysm and dissection is relatively novel.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: Retrospective * All patients who were referred to the surgical service for evaluation and management of aortic dissection were included. Perspective * Patients with initial suspicion of having AAD were perspectively enrolled. Exclusion Criteria: Retrospective * Patients who received packed red blood cells, whole blood, or platelets less than 10 days before the blood sample was taken; * Patients with aortic trauma, pseudo aneurysm, history of heart failure, renal dysfunction, severe pulmonary diseases, or active cancer; * Patients who entered the hospital for checkups after surgery. Perspective * Patients in whom there is little or no suspicion of a life-threatening disease; * Patients with confirmed acute myocardial infarction, angina or pulmonary embolism * The symptoms were clearly not related to AD (e.g. pleurisy, pneumonia, acute abdominal diseases).
