Frailty, Nutrition, and Recovery in People Waiting for a Liver Transplant

Investigation of the Relationship Between Frailty, Sarcopenia, Malnutrition, and Psychosocial Parameters and Post-Transplant Outcomes in Liver Transplant Candidates

Observational Izmir Bakircay University · NCT07414095

This project will test whether measures of frailty, muscle loss, nutrition, and psychological health can predict outcomes for adults (18–65) on the liver transplant waiting list in Turkey.

What this trial studies

This observational study enrolls adults listed for liver transplant and collects simple physical tests (strength, walking speed, daily activity), nutrition measures, and psychological screening before transplant. Researchers will link these multidimensional measures to clinical liver scores and track outcomes after transplant such as length of stay, complications, and survival. The design is longitudinal and descriptive, using routine clinical follow-up to relate pre-transplant status to post-transplant recovery. Findings aim to identify high-risk patients who might benefit from targeted pre- and post-transplant support.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18–65 who are listed for liver transplant at the participating center and can understand Turkish and complete simple physical tests.

Not a fit: Patients with severe orthopedic or neurological limitations, active serious extrahepatic malignancy, multiple organ transplants, or inability to follow verbal commands may not benefit from the assessments.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help clinicians identify patients at higher risk and tailor nutrition, physical therapy, and psychosocial support to improve recovery and survival.

How similar studies have performed: Previous observational studies have shown that frailty and sarcopenia predict worse outcomes after liver transplant, so this approach builds on existing evidence.
