Examining how muscle loss affects disease progression
Influence of Sarcopenia on the Course of the Diseases - Measured Using Ultrasound and Biochemical Markers

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to investigate the impact of sarcopenia, a condition characterized by muscle loss, on the prognosis of patients with liver cirrhosis, cancer, and those requiring mechanical ventilation. The study will utilize ultrasound-based measurements and serological muscle markers to assess muscle quantity and quality, providing a simpler alternative to more complex diagnostic methods. By identifying the relationship between sarcopenia and disease outcomes, the research seeks to enhance early prognostic estimations for affected patients.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include oncology patients with gastrointestinal tumors, individuals with liver cirrhosis, and patients in intensive care units.
Not a fit: Patients who are incapable of consenting or have congenital muscle diseases may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved prognostic assessments and tailored interventions for patients suffering from sarcopenia-related conditions.
How similar studies have performed: While the use of ultrasound for measuring sarcopenia is being explored, this approach is still in the validation phase and has not been widely tested in similar studies.
