Evaluating genetic causes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest

Evaluation of Genetic-molecular Causes of Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest: From Patients to Families

Observational Fondazione IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo di Pavia · NCT06844851

This study is trying to find out if genetic heart diseases are common in younger people who have a cardiac arrest outside of the hospital and to see how this might affect their family members.

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to determine the prevalence of hereditary heart diseases in patients who experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) in the Lombardy Region, particularly focusing on individuals aged 50 and younger. Blood samples will be collected during resuscitation to analyze genetic variants that may contribute to cardiac diseases. The study will also assess the arrhythmic risk for family members of the patients and refine the classification of uncertain genetic variants. Data will be integrated with patient characteristics and environmental factors to enhance understanding of the causes of OHCA.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 50 years or younger who suffer from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest of medical etiology.

Not a fit: Patients under 18 years old or those with non-medical causes of cardiac arrest may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved identification and prevention of sudden cardiac deaths in young individuals through genetic insights.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in identifying genetic causes of cardiac arrest, but this specific approach focusing on out-of-hospital cases is relatively novel.
