Deep brain stimulator battery replacement for people with Parkinson's disease

Revision of Deep Brain Stimulator in Patients With Parkinson's Disease: A Comparison of Perioperative Characteristics of Regional and General Anesthesia

Not applicable Interventional Ankara Etlik City Hospital · NCT07176494

This trial tests whether having a DBS battery replacement under regional chest-wall nerve blocks works as well and is as safe as having it under general anesthesia for people with Parkinson's disease aged 40–85.

What this trial studies

The trial compares two anesthesia approaches for DBS battery revision: general anesthesia versus regional anesthesia using chest-wall nerve blocks such as pectoserratus or interpectoral blocks. Eligible patients are adults with Parkinson's disease aged 40–85, ASA I–III, and a BMI between 18 and 30 who present for battery revision at Ankara Etlik City Hospital. The protocol focuses on anesthesia-related outcomes, including complications of general anesthesia and risks specific to regional blocks such as local anesthetic systemic toxicity, as well as perioperative recovery. Findings will inform which anesthesia option may offer better safety or recovery profiles for this procedure.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are people with Parkinson's disease aged 40–85 who need DBS battery revision, have ASA physical status I–III, a BMI of 18–30, and can undergo either general or regional anesthesia.

Not a fit: Patients outside the age, ASA, or BMI ranges or those with contraindications to regional anesthesia or complex surgical needs may not benefit from the approaches tested in this trial.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the approach could reduce anesthesia-related complications and speed recovery after DBS battery replacement.

How similar studies have performed: Regional chest-wall blocks have been used successfully for other generator and chest-wall procedures, but their specific application to DBS battery revisions is relatively novel and not widely established.
