Using pulsed electromagnetic fields to prevent physical decline in hospitalized cancer patients
Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields in Preventing Physical Deconditioning in Patients Undergoing Prolonged Hospitalization: A Case Match Control Study
This study is testing if pulsed electromagnetic fields can help hospitalized cancer patients maintain their physical strength and function while they are being treated.

What this trial studies
This clinical trial investigates the effectiveness of pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) in preventing physical deconditioning in patients with haematological cancers who are undergoing prolonged hospitalization. The study will compare the physical condition of patients receiving PEMF treatment to those who do not, assessing changes in muscle function and secretome over time. Healthy volunteers will also participate to evaluate the effects of PEMF in a non-cancer population. Participants will undergo physical tests and blood sampling at multiple time points to gather comprehensive data on the intervention's impact.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include haematology patients undergoing induction chemotherapy for acute leukemia or haematopoietic stem cell transplant.
Not a fit: Patients who are unable to walk at baseline or those with major disease states may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly improve the physical health and recovery of patients undergoing prolonged hospitalization for cancer treatment.
How similar studies have performed: While the use of PEMF in this specific context is novel, similar studies have shown promise in using electromagnetic therapies for muscle recovery and rehabilitation.
