What this trial studies
This study focuses on improving deep brain stimulation (DBS) therapy for essential tremor (ET) by utilizing subject-specific computational models to predict neural activation pathways. By analyzing high-field 7-Tesla MRI and diffusion tensor imaging from participants, the researchers aim to identify optimal stimulation settings that selectively target therapeutic pathways in the brain. The study will evaluate the efficacy and efficiency of these optimized settings in patients with medication-refractory tremor who have undergone VIM-DBS implantation. The goal is to streamline the programming process for clinicians and enhance treatment outcomes for ET patients.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals diagnosed with essential tremor who have medication-refractory symptoms and have received a VIM-DBS implant.
Not a fit: Patients with significant neurological disorders, prior stereotactic neurosurgery, or musculoskeletal disorders affecting limb movement may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to more effective and personalized treatment options for patients suffering from essential tremor.
How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies on DBS for essential tremor, this specific approach utilizing computational models for optimization is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
