Screening for HHV8 in solid organ transplant candidates

Screening for HHV8 Infection in Solid Organ Transplantation Donors, Candidates and Recipients

Observational Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda, Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico · NCT05081141

This study is testing if screening for a virus called HHV8 in people waiting for organ transplants can help doctors better monitor and manage the risk of the virus coming back after the transplant.

What this trial studies

This observational study focuses on screening candidates for solid organ transplantation for HHV8 seropositivity at the time of listing and transplantation. It involves monitoring blood levels of HHV8 DNA and specific IGRA tests for HHV8 in seropositive recipients and in cases of donor-recipient mismatches. The study aims to assess the risk of HHV8 reactivation post-transplantation and implement appropriate monitoring protocols. The research is conducted at a single institution in Milan, Italy.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include all patients listed for solid organ transplantation, such as lung, liver, and kidney transplant recipients.

Not a fit: Patients who are not candidates for solid organ transplantation or those who do not have HHV8 exposure may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve the management and outcomes of solid organ transplant patients by identifying and monitoring HHV8-related risks.

How similar studies have performed: While this approach is novel in the context of solid organ transplantation, similar studies have shown the importance of monitoring viral infections in transplant patients.
