Research on improving kindergarten yards for children's health
Nationwide Research on the Rewilding of Kindergarten Yards - Vahvistu
This study is testing whether making kindergarten yards more natural and full of plants can improve the health and learning of children aged 1-5 by looking at things like allergies, asthma, and their overall well-being.

What this trial studies
This study investigates the impact of rewilding kindergarten yards on children's health by enhancing biodiversity. It aims to evaluate how these changes affect the commensal microbiome, prevalence of allergies, asthma, atopic dermatitis, and cognitive skills in children aged 1-5. The study will involve 320 participants, with assessments of microbiota diversity, health symptoms, cortisol levels, and cognitive abilities. The approach includes both observational and microbiological analyses to understand the health benefits of increased biodiversity in urban settings.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are children aged 1-5 who attend kindergarten and have not used antibiotics in the past year.
Not a fit: Patients who have used antibiotics in the year prior to sampling may not benefit from this study due to potential alterations in their microbiota.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved health outcomes for children by reducing allergies and enhancing cognitive skills through environmental changes.
How similar studies have performed: While the concept of rewilding is gaining attention, this specific approach to enhancing children's health through kindergarten yard biodiversity is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested in prior studies.
