Pentoxifylline to boost liver regrowth after right‑lobe donor hepatectomy

Effect of Pentoxifylline on Liver Regeneration After Right Lobe Donor Hepatectomy: A Randomized Control Trial

Not applicable Interventional Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, India · NCT07085806

This will try giving pentoxifylline to live liver donors having right‑lobe hepatectomy to see if the remaining liver grows faster and lowers the risk of post‑surgery liver problems.

What this trial studies

This is a randomized, controlled interventional trial at a single tertiary liver center comparing injection pentoxifylline with a control (Plasmalyte) in live donors undergoing right‑lobe hepatectomy. The drug is given perioperatively and donors are followed with clinical exams, blood tests of liver function, and imaging to track liver volume and recovery. The main aim is to determine whether pentoxifylline improves markers of liver regeneration and reduces posthepatectomy liver dysfunction. Eligible participants are consenting live donors without hypersensitivity to pentoxifylline.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Healthy live liver donors scheduled for right‑lobe donor hepatectomy who provide informed consent and have no known hypersensitivity to pentoxifylline are the intended participants.

Not a fit: People who decline consent or who have hypersensitivity to pentoxifylline (or who are not undergoing right‑lobe donor hepatectomy) would not be eligible and therefore would not receive potential benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, pentoxifylline could speed liver regrowth and reduce the risk of posthepatectomy liver failure in live donors, improving donor safety.

How similar studies have performed: Prior randomized trials in non‑cirrhotic patients and animal studies have reported beneficial effects of pentoxifylline on small remnant liver regeneration and protection from small‑for‑size syndrome.
