Observing pneumonia and pleural effusion in hospitalized children
French Epidemiological Pediatric Study on Pneumonia and Empyema in Emergency Departments in Children 1 Month to 15 Years

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to describe the epidemiology of hospitalized pediatric pneumonia and pneumonia with pleural effusion, focusing on frequency, clinical characteristics, responsible bacteria, and antibiotic resistance. It includes data from over 15,000 children since 2009, with a recent shift to only include hospitalized cases to better understand severe instances. The study will analyze the long-term impact of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine on these conditions. Data collection will involve reviewing chest imaging and clinical symptoms to assess the severity and treatment outcomes.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are children aged 1 month to 15 years who are hospitalized with pneumonia or pleural effusion.
Not a fit: Patients who do not require hospitalization or refuse participation will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of severe pneumonia in children and improve treatment strategies.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies on pediatric pneumonia have shown success in understanding the disease, but this specific focus on hospitalized cases is a novel approach.
