Nutrition and disease activity in people with rheumatoid and other rheumatic diseases
Assessment of Nutritional Status in Rheumatic Diseases and Association to Disease Activity
This project will test whether nutrition and body composition are linked to disease activity in people with rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis (including psoriatic arthritis), systemic lupus erythematosus, or systemic sclerosis.

What this trial studies
This observational study measures nutritional status across patients with several rheumatic diseases and examines how those measures relate to disease activity. Investigators will collect anthropometric data, body composition, biochemical and immunological markers, and functional tests to build a comprehensive nutritional profile. Patients with conditions known to affect muscle mass (such as other connective tissue diseases, neurological disease, malignancy, advanced heart, liver, or renal failure) are excluded to avoid confounding by sarcopenia. The work is conducted at the Rheumatology and Rehabilitation Department of Cairo University and aims to identify patterns linking malnutrition or over-nutrition to inflammatory activity.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults diagnosed with RA, SpA (including PsA), SLE, or SSc who can attend clinic assessments and do not have other major conditions affecting muscle mass or severe organ failure are the ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Patients with other connective tissue diseases, neurological disease, active cancer, advanced heart or liver disease, or severe renal dysfunction were excluded and are unlikely to benefit from this study's findings.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this work could help clinicians identify and correct nutritional problems that may improve symptoms and outcomes for people with rheumatic diseases.
How similar studies have performed: Previous observational studies have reported links between nutrition, body composition, and disease activity in various rheumatic diseases, but methods and definitions vary across studies.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: Patients diagnosed with rheumatic diseases including RA, SpA, SLE and SSc. Exclusion Criteria: 1. Patients who are unable to comply with the physician assessment. 2. Patients with other connective tissue diseases, neurological diseases, malignancy, heart failure or severe renal dysfunction was excluded, as these diseases affect the muscle mass causing sarcopenia. 3. Advanced liver diseases
