Lung MRI for non-cancer lung disease (early IPF)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Lung: Non-Oncological Applications

Observational Fondazione IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo di Pavia · NCT07493187

This project will try using advanced lung MRI (with bronchoalveolar lavage when safe) to look for imaging and molecular signs in people with early-stage idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

What this trial studies

This is an observational, single-center project using advanced magnetic resonance imaging of the lungs in patients with early-stage IPF. When clinically appropriate and safe, bronchoalveolar lavage samples will be collected to link imaging features with cellular and molecular signatures. The work is motivated by data suggesting IPF shows neoplasm-like molecular behavior, including signaling through receptors such as MET, and aims to find noninvasive imaging correlates of those processes. All procedures are performed at Fondazione IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo di Pavia and no investigational treatments are given.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults with a clinical and radiological diagnosis of early-stage idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis who can safely undergo MRI and bronchoalveolar lavage are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: People with advanced IPF, or anyone who has contraindications to MRI or bronchoalveolar lavage, likely will not benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could provide noninvasive ways to detect and monitor early IPF changes and help guide future targeted therapies.

How similar studies have performed: Advanced lung MRI and molecular profiling in IPF have shown promising preliminary results, but combining MRI with molecular markers like MET signaling is still relatively novel.
