Long-term health of children born to mothers who had a solid organ transplant
Long-term Follow-up of the Offspring Born to Mothers With a Solid Organ Transplant
This project will look for long-term heart, kidney, and immune system problems in people aged 16 and older who were born to mothers who had a kidney, liver, pancreas, heart, or lung transplant.

What this trial studies
Researchers at University Medical Center Groningen will enroll offspring aged 16 years and older who were born after a mother's solid organ transplant and collect medical history, questionnaires, physical exams, blood tests, blood pressure measurements, and kidney and cardiovascular assessments. The cross-sectional cohort is designed to identify cardiovascular, renal, and immunological outcomes that may appear only later in life, such as hypertension, reduced kidney function, or altered immune markers possibly related to prenatal exposure to immunosuppressive drugs. Findings will be compared with expected norms and existing literature to detect signals of late-onset health effects related to maternal transplantation and pregnancy complications. Participation requires ability to consent and communication in Dutch or English and takes place at UMCG.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are people aged 16 or older who were born after their mother had a kidney, liver, pancreas (including islet), heart, or lung transplant and who can give informed consent and speak Dutch or English.
Not a fit: Children under 16, offspring whose mother received a transplant after the pregnancy, people who cannot consent, or non–Dutch/English speakers are not eligible and would not benefit from participation.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the results could clarify long-term health risks for these offspring and help doctors recommend targeted monitoring and care.
How similar studies have performed: Small studies in younger children have generally been reassuring, but very few studies have followed offspring into late adolescence or adulthood, making this a relatively novel long-term follow-up.
