Investigating concussions and contact sports in patients with REM sleep behavior disorder
Observational Cross-sectional Study Investigating the History of Concussion and Exposure to Contact Sports in Patients With REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder (RBD) Versus Controls (Without a Diagnosis of RBD)
Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust · NCT06270290
This study is trying to see if people with REM sleep behavior disorder have more concussions and contact sports experience compared to those without the disorder.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to explore the relationship between concussions, contact sports, and REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). It will compare a group of patients diagnosed with RBD to a control group without RBD to determine the prevalence of concussions and exposure to contact sports in both groups. Participants will be interviewed by a sleep medicine specialist to gather detailed histories regarding their concussion experiences and contact sports involvement. The findings may provide insights into potential risk factors associated with neurodegenerative disorders linked to RBD.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include individuals aged 50 and above diagnosed with REM sleep behavior disorder or age- and sex-matched controls without RBD.
Not a fit: Patients under 50 years of age or those with diagnoses of narcolepsy or post-traumatic stress disorder may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could help identify risk factors for neurodegenerative disorders in patients with RBD, leading to earlier diagnosis and intervention.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have indicated a correlation between concussions and neurodegenerative disorders, suggesting this approach may yield valuable insights.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria group with RBD: * Patient at the SDC with diagnosis of RBD (Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust). * 50 years of age or above (patients below this age would not be expected to have a RBD related to a synucleinopathy and other causes of RBD would need to be considered instead - e.g. narcolepsy, post-traumatic stress disorder). Inclusion criteria control group: * Patients who have undergone a v-PSG at the SDC (Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust) and who do not have history of suspected RBD or RBD confirmed by v-PSG. * 50 years of age or above This group will be age- and sex-matched to the RBD group. Exclusion criteria group with RBD: * Age \< 50 years of age. * Diagnoses of narcolepsy or post-traumatic stress disorder. * Subjects lacking capacity or literacy. * Non-English speakers. Exclusion criteria control group: * Age \< 50 years of age (in order to match RBD group). * REM sleep without atonia or confirmed RBD on v-PSG. * Diagnosis of neurological diseases, cognitive complaints or motor complaints. * Clinical history suggestive of parasomnia that may be included in the differential of RBD. * Subjects lacking capacity or literacy. * Non-English speakers.
