What this trial studies
Participants in the VIEW II screening program who are referred to the eye hospital are randomized into three parallel arms: SMS reminders, health worker reminders, or no additional intervention. The primary outcome is whether the participant presents to the eye hospital for the referral visit within 21 days of screening. The trial focuses on linkage-to-care for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma referrals and measures how each approach affects attendance and retention. Participants living in areas without reliable mobile connectivity are excluded because they cannot reliably receive SMS reminders.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are VIEW II participants who were referred to the eye hospital at their screening visit and can receive SMS messages if randomized to that arm.
Not a fit: Patients who are not referred, who lack reliable mobile connectivity, or who already attend appointments promptly may not gain additional benefit from these interventions.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the interventions could increase timely attendance at referral visits and enable earlier treatment to help prevent vision loss.
How similar studies have performed: Previous programs using SMS reminders and community health worker outreach have improved clinic attendance in other conditions and settings, though evidence specifically for eye-disease referral outcomes is limited.
