What this trial studies

This study aims to provide dental infection control treatment to older adult residents in nursing homes, assessing its impact on dental health, pneumonia incidence, and glucose control in diabetic patients. The intervention includes treating gum infections, applying fluoride, and assisting with daily oral hygiene through telehealth methods involving dental hygienists and assistants. The effectiveness of this approach will be evaluated by comparing health outcomes before and after the treatment over a one-year period. The study also includes a mentoring program for nursing home staff to improve oral hygiene practices.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults over 60 years old residing in nursing homes or communal care settings with manageable health conditions.

Not a fit: Patients under 60 years old or those with severe health issues that complicate treatment may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly improve dental health and overall well-being for nursing home residents, potentially reducing pneumonia and enhancing diabetes management.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have indicated that addressing dental infections can lead to improved health outcomes, suggesting this approach may be effective.
