How chronic liver diseases connect with other long-term illnesses

The Association of Liver Disease With Other Systemic Diseases, Focus on Diseases Progression, Treatments, and Clinical Outcomes: Analyses From the Hospital Database of Buddhist Tzu Chi Medical Foundation

Observational Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, Buddhist Tzu Chi Medical Foundation · NCT04525833

What this trial studies

This is a retrospective observational analysis of electronic health records from the Buddhist Tzu Chi Medical Foundation hospital database. The project will identify patients with chronic liver conditions (hepatitis B, hepatitis C, alcoholic liver disease, fatty liver, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma) and examine associations with other systemic diseases, disease progression, treatments, and outcomes. Investigators will extract diagnoses, comorbidities, laboratory data, and treatment histories and apply statistical methods to detect correlations and patterns. Results aim to clarify how liver dysfunction influences risks and prognosis in other organ systems and to identify high-risk patient groups.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18–99 with medical records from gastroenterology clinics at the Tzu Chi hospitals, particularly those with recorded chronic liver disease, are the intended population.

Not a fit: People under 18 or over 99, those without records at Tzu Chi hospitals, or individuals seeking new interventional treatments rather than record-based insights are unlikely to receive direct benefit.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this work could help clinicians identify patients at higher risk of systemic complications and improve monitoring or preventative care.

How similar studies have performed: Previous observational studies have reported links between diabetes and liver disease and between liver disease and systemic outcomes, but comprehensive retrospective analyses across multiple liver conditions are still limited.
