Exploring the link between carotid atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease

Carotid Atherosclerosis in Predicting Coronary Artery Disease

What this trial studies

This observational study investigates the relationship between carotid atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease (CAD) by examining carotid plaque burden and composition features, particularly focusing on the lipid necrotic core. Patients experiencing chest tightness or pain will undergo carotid artery ultrasonography prior to coronary angiography to assess the correlation between carotid and coronary atherosclerosis. The study aims to identify phenotypic patterns of carotid atherosclerosis and their association with the prevalence and severity of CAD.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients experiencing chest tightness or chest pain who are scheduled for carotid ultrasound and coronary angiography.

Not a fit: Patients without symptoms of chest tightness or pain, or those not undergoing carotid ultrasound and coronary angiography, may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance the understanding of how carotid atherosclerosis predicts coronary artery disease, potentially leading to improved diagnostic and treatment strategies.

How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of this study may be novel, previous studies have indicated a significant association between carotid atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease.
