What this trial studies
This clinical trial investigates the impact of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) interventions on critically ill patients experiencing organ failure in the intensive care unit (ICU). The study involves a multi-center, non-randomized design with three groups: an intervention group receiving TCM treatments, a control group of patients admitted during the study period, and a historical control group from previous admissions. The intervention will last for two weeks and will include herbal medicine, acupuncture, and low-level laser therapy based on TCM principles. Key outcomes will be assessed using the sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score, ICU and hospital length of stay, and medication usage.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are critically ill surgical ICU patients aged 20 and above who can receive TCM interventions approved by their attending physician.
Not a fit: Patients whose family members refuse TCM intervention will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide a novel approach to improving outcomes for critically ill patients with organ failure.
How similar studies have performed: While traditional Chinese medicine has been explored in various contexts, this specific approach in critically ill patients is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
