What this trial studies

This study evaluates a brief transdiagnostic treatment for anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in South Africa, delivered by non-specialist providers in primary care clinics. The intervention, known as False Safety Behavior Elimination Treatment (F-SET), aims to address the high prevalence of these conditions in low and middle-income countries where access to evidence-based treatments is limited. Participants receiving the brief intervention will be compared to those receiving enhanced standard care, allowing for an assessment of both effectiveness and implementation barriers. The study seeks to provide a culturally congruent and less complex treatment option for individuals in need.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include individuals diagnosed with a primary anxiety disorder or PTSD who are seeking treatment in primary care settings.

Not a fit: Patients who are acutely suicidal, have severe substance use disorders, or are currently engaged in other forms of psychotherapy may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly improve access to effective mental health treatment for anxiety and PTSD in underserved populations.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using brief, transdiagnostic approaches for mental health treatment, indicating potential for success in this novel application.
