What this trial studies
The Human Trisome Project aims to enhance Down syndrome research by creating a biobank that provides de-identified biological samples and health information to approved researchers. Participants will undergo a blood draw, mouth swab, and allow researchers to access their health information annually for up to five years. Optional procedures include providing urine and/or stool samples and extending participation beyond five years. This initiative seeks to improve understanding of Down syndrome and related medical conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and congenital heart defects.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include individuals aged 6 months to 89 years who either have Down syndrome or do not have Down syndrome.
Not a fit: Patients who are prisoners or wards of the state will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this project could accelerate research and lead to better treatments and understanding of Down syndrome and its associated conditions.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies utilizing biobanks for genetic and health research have shown success, indicating that this approach is promising.
