Assessing Trigeminal Neuralgia with Advanced MRI Techniques
Assessment in Patients With Essential Trigeminal Neuralgia of Nerve Involvement by MRI in DTI and Functional Connectivity in "Resting State"
This study is testing advanced MRI techniques to see if they can help doctors understand the causes of trigeminal neuralgia better and improve treatment options for patients.

What this trial studies
This study evaluates patients with essential trigeminal neuralgia using advanced MRI techniques, including diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and resting state functional MRI (fMRI). The goal is to better understand the relationship between vascular conflicts and nerve damage that may not be visible with standard MRI. By incorporating these additional imaging sequences, the study aims to improve the assessment of trigeminal nerve involvement and potentially guide surgical interventions. The MRI examination will be conducted on a high-resolution 3 Tesla machine and will last approximately 45 minutes.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 and over with unilateral essential trigeminal neuralgia who are being evaluated for potential surgical treatment.
Not a fit: Patients with neurodegenerative or inflammatory neurological conditions, those who have previously undergone surgery for trigeminal neuralgia, or individuals with contraindications to MRI will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to more accurate diagnoses and improved surgical outcomes for patients suffering from trigeminal neuralgia.
How similar studies have performed: While the use of advanced MRI techniques in assessing trigeminal neuralgia is promising, this specific approach combining DTI and resting state fMRI is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested in prior studies.
