What this trial studies

This is a small randomized feasibility trial recruiting 24 adults awaiting elective curative cancer surgery from University Hospitals Plymouth. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive the GoPREPARE virtual group prehabilitation education or usual care. GoPREPARE was co-designed using patient input and focuses on increasing physical activity, improving nutrition, and supporting emotional wellbeing before surgery. The trial will examine the practicalities of recruitment, delivery, and outcome measurement ahead of a larger effectiveness trial.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults scheduled for elective curative-intent surgery for any body-cavity cancer who have at least three weeks before their operation, can understand spoken English, have mental capacity, and have not previously undergone prehabilitation are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Children, pregnant people, those who lack mental capacity, people who do not understand spoken English, those with prior prehabilitation or prior cancer surgery are unlikely to benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, GoPREPARE could reduce postoperative complications and speed recovery by improving patients' fitness, nutrition and emotional preparedness before cancer surgery.

How similar studies have performed: Group prehabilitation and 'surgery school' programs are widely used and show promise in small studies, but there is limited high-quality evidence specifically for virtual group formats, so this approach remains relatively untested.
