Using PRF to enhance healing before radiation therapy
Topical Application of PRF in Tooth Extraction Sockets Before Radiation Therapy for Head and Neck Cancer
NA · University of Giessen · NCT06406530

What this trial studies
This study investigates the effects of Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) on wound healing in patients undergoing tooth extractions prior to radiation therapy for head and neck cancer. Patients will receive either PRF treatment or natural healing in their extraction sockets, with the aim of preventing complications such as osteoradionecrosis. The study will also monitor pain perception during the healing process. Participants must have bilateral tooth extractions and will be randomly assigned to receive PRF in one socket while the other socket heals naturally.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults over 18 with head and neck cancer requiring bilateral tooth extractions before radiation therapy.
Not a fit: Patients who have previously undergone radiation therapy in the head and neck area or are currently pregnant or breastfeeding may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly improve healing outcomes and reduce pain for patients undergoing radiation therapy.
How similar studies have performed: While the use of PRF has shown promise in other contexts, its application specifically for preventing osteoradionecrosis in this setting is novel and has not been extensively tested.
