What this trial studies

This double-blind, randomized, crossover trial investigates whether long-term indoor air filtration can slow the progression of atherothrombosis in adults with a history of ischemic heart disease. The study will involve 112 participants who will undergo two 9-month periods of either true HEPA filtration or sham filtration, separated by a 3-month wash-out period. Researchers will monitor indoor air quality and collect health data, including vascular function and blood pressure, to assess the impact of reduced indoor fine particulate matter exposure on heart disease progression.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 65 to 84 years with a stable history of ischemic heart disease living in Los Angeles County.

Not a fit: Patients with active cancer treatments or significant neurological diseases may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly slow the progression of heart disease in patients with a history of ischemic heart disease.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach of using air filtration for health benefits is promising, this specific intervention has not been extensively tested in similar studies.
