Using a prediction tool to manage low blood pressure during laparoscopic colorectal surgery

Hypotension Prediction Index for Prevention of Hypotension and Postoperative Complications During Laparoscopic Surgery for Colorectal Cancer: A Multi-Center Randomized Trial

NA · National Taiwan University Hospital · NCT06756672

What this trial studies

This study investigates the effectiveness of the Hypotension Prediction Index (HPI) in reducing the severity of intraoperative hypotension during laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgeries. It involves a randomized assignment of 120 patients aged 20-80 years to either an intervention group, which receives HPI guidance, or a control group without such guidance. The primary focus is on measuring the duration and severity of hypotension, defined as a mean arterial pressure below 65 mmHg, and its correlation with postoperative complications. The study is conducted at National Taiwan University Hospital and Taipei Veterans General Hospital.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients aged 20-80 years undergoing elective laparoscopic colorectal cancer resection.

Not a fit: Patients with severe heart or lung diseases may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly reduce the incidence of severe hypotension and related complications during and after surgery.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown promise in using the Hypotension Prediction Index, but its application in laparoscopic colorectal surgery is relatively novel.
