Understanding persistent pain after orthopedic surgery

Assessment and Risk Stratification of the Development of Postoperative Persistent Postoperative Pain in Patients Undergoing Orthopedic Surgery

Observational A.O.U. Città della Salute e della Scienza · NCT05370924

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to assess the development of persistent postoperative pain in patients undergoing orthopedic surgeries, particularly those at high risk such as knee and hip replacements or spine fusion. It seeks to understand the prevalence and factors contributing to the transition from acute to chronic pain following surgery. By analyzing patient outcomes, the study hopes to inform better pain management strategies while minimizing opioid use. The research focuses on a range of orthopedic procedures to gather comprehensive data on postoperative pain experiences.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients undergoing high-risk orthopedic surgeries like knee or hip prosthetic surgeries and spine fusions.

Not a fit: Patients undergoing redo prosthetic surgeries or those with trauma injuries may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved pain management strategies and reduced incidence of chronic pain in postoperative patients.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have indicated varying prevalence rates of persistent postoperative pain, suggesting that this area of research is significant but still requires further exploration.
