Understanding immune system activation in patients with chronic kidney disease on dialysis

Activation of the Contact System and the Immune System in Patients With Chronic Kidney

Observational Odense University Hospital · NCT05266092

What this trial studies

This observational study investigates the immune response and contact system activation in patients with chronic kidney disease who are undergoing hemodialysis. It aims to explore the heightened mortality rates associated with bloodstream infections, particularly those caused by Staphylococcus aureus, and how hemodialysis may compromise the immune system's ability to combat these infections. By analyzing blood samples from patients, the study seeks to identify key factors that contribute to the increased susceptibility to infections in this population.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults over 18 years with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.

Not a fit: Patients with acute kidney disease or those not undergoing dialysis may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved strategies for preventing infections and reducing mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease on dialysis.

How similar studies have performed: While similar studies have explored immune responses in chronic kidney disease, this specific focus on hemodialysis patients and their susceptibility to S. aureus infections is relatively novel.
