What this trial studies
This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of three different interventions designed to help tobacco users quit smoking within HIV outpatient clinics in Vietnam. The interventions include a combination of counseling and referral to a national quitline, a structured cessation counseling program, and the addition of nicotine replacement therapy. A total of 672 patients will be randomly assigned to one of the three intervention arms, with their smoking status monitored over a six-month period using biochemical validation. The study also includes formative assessments and pilot testing to ensure the interventions are tailored to the local clinical context.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are current tobacco users who are patients at HIV outpatient clinics in Hanoi and can be reached by phone.
Not a fit: Patients who are pregnant, nursing, or have serious health conditions such as recent myocardial infarction or arrhythmias may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could significantly improve smoking cessation rates among people living with HIV, enhancing their overall health and quality of life.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown success with similar tobacco cessation interventions in various populations, indicating potential for positive outcomes in this context.
