What this trial studies
Researchers will conduct structured interviews and surveys with English-speaking participants aged 18–30 living in the Roswell Park catchment to document histories of tobacco and cannabis co-use. Participants are grouped by current product use: daily cigarette smokers who rarely vape, or daily nicotine vapers who rarely smoke cigarettes. Interview transcripts will undergo thematic analysis to identify individual, social, and product-level factors linked to initiation, escalation, and maintenance of co-use. This is a non-interventional, observational protocol focused on qualitative and survey data collection.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are English-speaking adults aged 18–30 who live in the Roswell Park catchment, use cannabis at least weekly, and either smoke cigarettes daily (and vape ≤1 day/week) or use nicotine vapes daily (and smoke ≤1 day/week).
Not a fit: People under 18 or over 30, those who do not use cannabis at least weekly, or those living outside the Roswell Park catchment are not eligible and would not benefit from participating.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could inform better-targeted prevention and cessation strategies for young adults who use both cannabis and tobacco.
How similar studies have performed: Previous qualitative and survey research has described common tobacco–cannabis co-use patterns, so this structured interview approach builds on established methods while focusing on a specific young adult population.
