What this trial studies
This clinical trial aims to address the challenges faced by individuals with suicidal thoughts and behaviors in accessing professional help. It involves a fully remote randomized controlled trial with 364 participants aged 16 and older, recruited through a suicide prevention helpline in the Netherlands. Participants will be assigned to either Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Suicide Prevention (BCBT-SP) or a semi-guided online self-help course designed to reduce suicidal thoughts. The study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions in preventing suicide attempts, which is a critical gap in current online interventions.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 16 and older living in the Netherlands who have experienced suicidal thoughts or behaviors in the past four weeks.
Not a fit: Patients who are currently engaged in regular mental health treatment or have severe mood disorders or psychotic symptoms may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide a more effective online intervention for reducing both suicidal thoughts and behaviors in individuals at risk.
How similar studies have performed: While previous online interventions have shown limited success in reducing suicidal thoughts, this approach aims to fill a crucial gap by focusing on preventing suicide attempts, making it a novel approach.
