What this trial studies

This observational study aims to address the increasing incidence of stroke in low-income countries in Africa, particularly Uganda. It focuses on understanding the risk factors associated with stroke and developing effective prevention and rehabilitation strategies. The research involves collaboration between the Karolinska Institutet and the Africa Medical and Behavioral Sciences Organization, which is collecting data from 17,000 households to identify potential stroke risk factors and assess the need for rehabilitation services. The findings will contribute to improving health outcomes in line with sustainable development goals.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study include individuals who have experienced a stroke or have risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, HIV, malaria, physical inactivity, or obesity.

Not a fit: Patients who have not had a stroke and do not possess any risk factors for stroke may not receive any benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to better prevention and rehabilitation strategies for stroke, ultimately reducing its prevalence and mortality rates.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies focusing on stroke prevention and rehabilitation in low-income settings have shown promise, indicating that this approach is both relevant and necessary.
