What this trial studies

This project aims to develop and evaluate a culturally tailored prevention program called Native PATHS for Indigenous youth in grades 5-8. The study will involve feedback sessions with youth and their family members to adapt the program, followed by a pilot randomized controlled trial to assess its efficacy. The program focuses on delaying the initiation of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use by promoting ATOD-free activities and positive decision-making. The research is guided by behavioral economic and positive psychological principles to address health disparities in Indigenous populations.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include Indigenous youth in grades 5-8 who reside in a First Nation community and have a supportive family member involved in their life.

Not a fit: Patients who do not identify as members of a First Nation or are not in the specified grade range may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly reduce substance use initiation among Indigenous youth, leading to improved health outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: While there is a pressing need for culturally tailored prevention programs, this specific approach is novel and has not been extensively tested in similar populations.
