What this trial studies

This cross-sectional study will enroll about 160 adults attending the Department of Periodontology and collect clinical periodontal measures including probing depth, clinical attachment loss, bleeding on probing, and plaque index. Investigators will calculate the Periodontal Inflamed Surface Area (PISA) to quantify inflammatory burden and ask participants to complete the OSHIP-Perio questionnaire to measure oral health-related quality of life. Researchers will analyze associations between oral hygiene practices, clinical periodontal parameters, PISA, and questionnaire scores to identify clinical and patient-centered correlations. Individuals recently on antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drugs, with recent periodontal treatment, who are pregnant or lactating, or who cannot complete the questionnaire will be excluded.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18 and older who attend the Department of Periodontology, can provide informed consent, and can complete the OSHIP-Perio questionnaire are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: People who recently used antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drugs, had periodontal treatment within six months, are pregnant or lactating, or cannot complete the questionnaire are unlikely to benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, results could help clinicians target hygiene education and treatment to improve patients' oral-health–related quality of life.

How similar studies have performed: Previous research has shown relationships between periodontal disease severity and reduced oral health–related quality of life, so this approach builds on established findings rather than being entirely novel.
