Observing physiological changes in ARDS patients in the prone position

The Respiratory Physiologic Efficacy of Prone Position and Its Association With Outcomes in ARDS: A Prospective Observational Cohort Study

West China Hospital · NCT06586736

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to monitor physiological indicators such as ventilation and oxygenation in patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) who are placed in the prone position. It seeks to identify trends in these indicators to determine their predictive value for patient prognosis. The study will focus on the relationship between ventilation/perfusion ratios and patient outcomes, particularly in the context of mechanical ventilation. By analyzing these changes, the research hopes to provide insights into which patients may benefit from prone positioning.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are intubated patients aged 18 and older with moderate to severe ARDS who are undergoing mechanical ventilation and prone positioning.

Not a fit: Patients who may not benefit from this study include those with cardiac structural shunts, pulmonary embolism, or those undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could help identify which ARDS patients are most likely to benefit from prone positioning, potentially improving their outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown that prone positioning can improve outcomes in severe ARDS, but this study aims to refine the understanding of which patients benefit most, making it a novel approach.
