What this trial studies

This observational study aims to monitor the dietary intake of older adult patients who have undergone hip fracture surgery from the day of surgery until three days post-operation. The primary goal is to determine if their energy intake meets their resting energy expenditure needs. Additionally, the study will explore correlations between dietary intake and length of hospital stay, comorbidities, and the development of postoperative complications. Participants will maintain a weighed food diary to provide accurate dietary intake data without adding stress to their recovery process.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults over 60 years old with a confirmed diagnosis of a hip fracture requiring surgical repair.

Not a fit: Patients with pathological or traumatic hip fractures, those who cannot speak English, or those undergoing oncologic treatment may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved nutritional strategies for older adults recovering from hip fractures, potentially enhancing recovery outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: While there is ongoing research into postoperative care and nutrition, this specific observational approach focusing on dietary intake in hip fracture patients is relatively novel.
