What this trial studies
The Gastric Precancerous Conditions Study (GAPS) aims to observe patients at elevated risk for gastric cancer, focusing on those with precursors like atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia. This observational study will recruit both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals undergoing endoscopy at Stanford Health Care. Participants will include those with known precursor lesions or those at high risk for developing them, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of the progression towards gastric cancer.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals aged 35 to 84 undergoing outpatient endoscopy for symptoms like abdominal pain or dyspepsia, or for surveillance of known gastric precursors.
Not a fit: Patients who have had gastric surgery or a history of solid tumor or bone marrow transplant may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to earlier detection and improved management of gastric cancer, potentially enhancing patient outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in identifying gastric precursors and their association with gastric cancer, indicating that this approach is supported by existing research.
