What this trial studies
This observational study aims to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of functional neurological disorders (FND) in patients with non-functional movement disorders, referred to as 'functional overlay'. Participants will undergo a series of clinical and electrophysiological examinations, including neurological assessments, neuropsychological testing, and questionnaires that evaluate psychological, biological, and social risk factors. The study seeks to compare patients with functional motor disorders to those with non-functional movement disorders to identify differences in functional symptoms and underlying mechanisms.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 18 to 80 with either functional or non-functional movement disorders.
Not a fit: Patients who are unable to consent or do not speak German fluently may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of functional neurological disorders, leading to better diagnosis and treatment strategies for affected patients.
How similar studies have performed: While functional neurological disorders are a recognized area of study, this specific observational approach to understanding their prevalence in movement disorders is relatively novel.
