Monitoring carbon dioxide levels in patients on VA-ECMO

Validation of Continuously Determined Transcutaneous Carbon Dioxide Partial Pressures in Patients Supported with Veno-arterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation

Observational Medical University of Vienna · NCT04445909

What this trial studies

This study evaluates the effectiveness of continuous transcutaneous carbon dioxide monitoring in patients receiving veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO). It aims to compare non-invasive transcutaneous carbon dioxide measurements with traditional blood gas analysis to improve monitoring accuracy. Participants will have their carbon dioxide levels measured simultaneously through various methods over a four-hour observation period. The study also records additional physiological parameters to assess the overall condition of the patients.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults with low cardiac output requiring VA-ECMO support.

Not a fit: Patients under 18 years old will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance the monitoring of carbon dioxide levels in VA-ECMO patients, potentially improving patient outcomes by preventing harmful fluctuations.

How similar studies have performed: While this approach is innovative, similar studies have not been widely reported, indicating a novel exploration in this area.
